A New Year: Record Enrollment, New Facility, New Orientation Tradition

August 20, 2010

With the start of the academic year just around the corner, here are a few updates on York College:

Record Enrollment

York will welcome its largest class on Aug. 27, when first-year students arrive on campus for move-in day. The Class of 2014 represents the highest number of freshman student deposits in the College’s history, as approximately 1225 first-time freshmen – up from 1092 last year – are expected to arrive on campus this fall.

The Grounds Building, situated on the southwest corner of campus near the Tyler Run Apartment complex, was transformed this summer into the Ecological Sciences Building. The three-story annex will be topped with a spacious five-room greenhouse, and new labs in the Building will be dedicated to Terrestrial Ecology and Aquatic Ecology. The Building will allow the Biological Sciences Department (and its plants) to both grow in size and functionality.

Academic Convocation

A new York College tradition has begun this year, as the Class of 2014 will be the first to experience an Academic Convocation on Monday, Aug. 30. The program for the 10:30 am event includes a welcome from senior class president Heidi Freeland and College president George Waldner, a presentation on the academic mission of the College by Dean of Academic Affairs Dominic DelliCarpini, and an address to the class by Kathleen Halligan of the Department of Physical Sciences. Members of the faculty, robed in regalia, will welcome York’s newest students following the event. Check here for information on other orientation events.
