Acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Bujalski will present his 2009 film “Beeswax” at 7 p.m., Sept. 30, in York College’s Humanities Center Room 218. The event, which is open to the public free of charge, will open this year’s Humanities Film Series. Viewers are encouraged to remain after the film to question Bujalski about his experiences with this new film, and about the particulars of “Beeswax” itself.
Cinema Scope magazine praises Bujalski for “making what may prove to be the defining movies about his generation.” The young independent filmmaker has written and directed several films, including “Funny Ha Ha” (2002), “Mutual Appreciation” (2005), and “Beeswax” (2009). His talent has been recognized by awards that include the “Someone to Watch for Award” and the 2004 Black Point Film Festival “Festival Award” for “Funny Ha Ha.”
“Beeswax” follows twin sisters Jeannie and Lauren (played by real-life twins Tilly and Maggie Hatcher) and their complications with work, family, and love in their home of Austin, Texas. When paraplegic business owner Jeannie is swept into a lawsuit by her business partner, she is forced to call upon her ex-boyfriend for help. Lauren, meanwhile, unbound by responsibility, is considering abandoning her life in Texas. Imbued with the quirks and awkward moments of everyday life, Bujalski’s film is praised by the New York Times as “intimate and unassuming” but serves as a “reminder that the most specific visions are often the most universal.”
The 2010–11 Humanities Film Series, sponsored by the department of English and Humanities, will continue to show notable films, like “Beeswax,” for the benefit and enrichment of the York community. All events in the Series are open to the public and free of charge.
