Horror novelist Brian Keene to teach Community Education course

Horror novelist Brian Keene will teach a course on how to write and publish a novel as part of the Office of Community Education's fall offerings. Keene is a two-time Bram Stoker Award-winning horror author, first in 2001 for his non-fiction work Jobs In Hell and then again in 2003 for his debut novel, the post-apocalyptic zombie tale The Rising. In 2004, he won the Shocker Award for his non-fiction work Sympathy For the Devil. His other novels include Dead Sea, Ghoul, City of the Dead, Terminal, The Conqueror Worms, Fear Of Gravity and more. Several of his books and stories have been optioned for film, video game and comic book adaptations.

SAT Prep Course - Designed to build upon students' knowledge and expand their academic skills on this important test. Concepts and review included. Choose from two courses: Session 1 from Sept. 7 through Oct. 4; Session II from Nov. 1 - 29. Classes are on Mondays (except Sept. 7) from 6 to 9 p.m.

ACT Prep Course - Excellent preparation to help students do their best on this test. Summer 2011.

How to Write and Publish a Novel - This seven-week course is designed to provide the participant with the information needed to arrange his/her thoughts, reduce them to writing, and seek a publisher for his/her work. Tuesdays from Oct. 19 Nov. 30.

Digital Photography - Designed for those who want to learn both about the camera and how to capture the very best shot indoors and out of doors. Three levels of instruction available: Level I Wednesday from Sept. 8 - 29; Level II Wednesdays from Oct. 6 - 27; Level III Wednesdays from Nov. 3 - 24. 7 to 9 p.m.

Nursing Home Administrator Program - Sixteen-module National Healthcareer Association Program is one of the required steps in the process of obtaining the administrators license. Begins Sept. 17 and continues for eight Friday/Saturday sessions until complete.

Nursing Home Administration Review Course - Review course is designed to cover the five disciplines included in the state/national examination. It drills into the materials expected to be included in the examination, and some test tips are included. Nov. 12 and 13.

RN CEUs - Fifteen Continuing Education Units available in gerontology, diseases of aging, death and dying; second class is dietary. Oct. 16 and 22. 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Chinese: Language and Culture - Learn the basics of this romantic and unusual language. Thursdays from Oct. 21 Dec. 9. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Spanish: Language and Culture - Learn basic use of the language. Excellent for travelers, people who work with Hispanics, or people who want to learn something new. Tuesdays from Sept. 14 - Nov. 2. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Self-Defense for Women - Three-session class is designed to provide the physical and mental preparation to ward off and/or avoid an attacker using a variety of moves, objects, and martial art. The class is scheduled to be taught by a certified instructor. Saturdays from Sept. 11 - Oct. 2. 10 a.m. until noon.

Painting - Four-session class is for people who always wanted to draw but never took the time or for those who want to improve their skills. The course includes painting basics, brush control, shading, color mixing and more. Mondays from Oct. 11 - Nov. 1. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Responsible Financial Planning - Three-session class covers the basics of investing, the investment tools to use, understanding the market and how to create your own investing strategy. Thursdays beginning on Oct. 7. 7 to 9 p.m.
