Percussion Ensemble to present April 17 concert

April 9, 2010

York College’s Percussion Groove Ensemble will present a concert inspired by African music at 3 p.m., April 17, in the Collegiate Performing Arts Center. This event is open to the public free of charge.

The concert will begin with a tribute to West African drumming, as the Ensemble performs an arrangement of traditional dance style known as Kuku. A percussion arrangement of a Batrok dance will follow. The concert will end as all members of the ensemble join in on the War classic, “Cisco Kid.”

The York College Percussion Groove Ensemble is an ensemble with a different twist. The Groove Ensemble plays traditional music from West Africa, South Africa, and Indonesia. The group also performs music in the modern classical style, including the music of Steve Reich and Phillip Glass. Student compositions are featured on a regular basis.
