Players to present 'She Stoops to Conquer'

York College’s student theatre troupe, The Players, will present “She Stoops to Conquer” at 7 p.m., on March 23-27, in the Perko Playpen Theatre. The performances are open to the public free of charge.

Oliver Goldsmith’s “She Stoops to Conquer” is a comic masterpiece of two young men duped into mistaking the home of a country gentleman for an inn but eventually, after misunderstandings, intrigues, and discoveries, ending up with satisfactory conclusions to their love affairs.

“She Stoops to Conquer” was first performed in London in 1773; the play is a great favorite for study by English literature and theatre classes in Britain and the United States. It is one of the few plays from the 18th century to have an enduring appeal, and is still regularly performed today. It has been adapted into a film several times, including in 1914 and 1923. Initially the play was titled “Mistakes of a Night,” and indeed, the events within the play happen during the very limited time frame of one night.

The York College Players produce plays and occasionally musicals from the classic and modern repertories for the education and appreciation of the college community. Funded through the Department of English and Humanities, Players is open to all full- and part-time students who meet academic criteria.
