Profile in Professionalism

February 15, 2010

Paul Deysher of Fleetwood, Pa., is a senior computer engineering major and current co-op at Case-New Holland in Lancaster.

What brought you to York?

The size of the campus and the number of students was just right for me – not too big, not too small. The cost was also very attractive for a quality private college education.

What have you been most impressed with during your experience here?

The most impressive thing about YCP is the professor’s attention to the students. Both in engineering and in my other courses, every professor has been extremely helpful. Particularly, the engineering staff have all been very helpful whenever I have questions or concerns about the course work or material. The professors are always willing to help both in and outside of class. If you put in the effort, the staff is always willing to do whatever it takes to help students learn.

Also, there have been many new construction projects around campus. There is new gym facility, dorms, a performing arts center, and a new engineering center. All of these make for a very nice-looking campus as well as provide fantastic learning and recreation environments.

If there a particular faculty member who inspires you?

I have enjoyed my physics laboratory courses with Ron Rentzel. He knows all the equipment very well and always explains everything thoroughly during labs. In the lecture portion of class, Ron is most times in the back of the room, taking notes with the rest of us. It’s nice to see him right there with us, continually learning in order to better help us. Both in and outside of lab and class, Ron is the nicest person to talk to, never has anything negative to say, and always puts a smile on your face.

Do you believe your education (and co-op) experiences at YCP will prepare you for a future career in engineering?

I know my education at YCP will thoroughly prepare me. I see it looking back at the material I learned at the end of each semester and realizing how much I know that I didn’t know before. The engineering courses here give a broad sense of what to expect in a professional career, and I can see that in my co-op experiences. Requiring the engineering students is a great way for us to use our technical skills as well as learn new ones that cannot be taught in a classroom. They also help validate our education and make us know we are learning practical and useful skills. I use my education nonstop during my co-op terms.

The co-op specifically helps us build strong professional skills, such as job searching, resume writing, interviewing, and technical job experience. The companies I have had a co-op with have included me as a regular employee, giving me tasks and responsibilities I would see as an entry-level professional. The Engineering Program requires us to obtain a total of three co-op positions, each lasting the length of a semester. This results in each Engineering student having about a year of technical experience at graduation.

What are your duties at your current co-op at Case-New Holland (CNH)?

I work with the electronic components group at CNH. This group is responsible for the component in all the vehicles CNH produces. What I have been doing is validating circuit designs that have been done by an outside agency. I derive the equations for these circuits, and they relay that information to the system engineers who are responsible for the design and general control characteristics of the individual systems. The group does this type of work, while also researching components for future projects. The group is global and has members all over. This enables this group and my manager to support every program across CNH. Because of this global spread, a lot of effort goes into management, both of people and products.

Are you involved in activities on campus?

I am a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. The fraternity has been a great character building experience for me; it has provided a healthy social life on campus, along with the great experiences that builds leadership and management skills. It also has given me lifelong friends and a college experience I will never forget.
