Distinguished Recent Graduate Award - Shawn Halsey ’01

Halsey attended York College from 1997-2001, earning a bachelor’s degree in Economics/Finance. Following his graduation, he secured a position as a financial advisor with Legg Mason in Baltimore. He moved to a similar position with Morgan Stanley, now Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, in 2001, and is now completing his ninth year with the firm. Halsey has played a leading role in transforming the position of financial advisor from a transactional basis to a client-centered strategy that emphasizes financial long-term planning, and asset management and protection. He has been given additional responsibilities for implementing the training program for new financial advisors in the Maryland region, and for the firm’s Branch Continuity Program, which provides for contingency planning during disruptive external events.

Halsey devotes time to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, where he volunteers as a wish granter. In that capacity, he handles the details and arrangements that make the child’s wish happen. He also actively volunteers on behalf of the College. He served on the Alumni Board of Directors from 2006-2008, and is currently a member of the Collegiate Council. He joined the Chesapeake Alumni Chapter Executive Committee in 2003, and became president of that group in 2009. He has also been a Success After College panelist for the past five years, and has been a member of the Alumni Golf Outing Committee.

Prior to founding his company, he worked for Yorktowne Kitchens from 1973-1976, and as general manager for Number One Supply Company from 1976-1983. Professionally, Scott has served on the Board of Directors of the Woodworking Machinery Industry Association, and is affiliated with the Baltimore/Washington Lumber Sales Club, the oldest such organization in the country. He was president of that organization from 1978-1982.

Cayce’s service to York College demonstrates his loyalty and commitment to this institution. He was one of the founders of the Chesapeake Alumni Chapter in 1992, and has served on the Chapter Executive Committee since that time, including a term as president. He was a charter member of the Collegiate Council in 1993, serving as vice chair, and as a member of the Collegiate Council Task force on Athletics at York College. In 1996 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees, and continues to serve in that capacity.  He has been chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the board, and played a significant role in the design concept for the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. In 2007, Cayce became the first four-year alumnus to serve as vice-chair of the Board of Trustees. His financial support of the College has been significant and meaningful as well. Cayce participated in the last two capital campaigns, and has been an annual contributor for many years. He also supports the annual Alumni Golf Outing as a frequent sponsor and participant.
