YCP Leads the CAC with 187 All-Academic Team Members

        YORK, PA-York College led the Capital Athletic Conference in the total number of student-athletes earning All-Academic accolades for 2008-09 as announced by the office on Monday morning. The Spartans had 187 student-athletes recognized by the conference, an improvement of 12 student-athletes from last year’s conference leading total. The Spartans’ total outdistances second place Salisbury by 51 student-athletes. Student-Athletes must attain a minimum of a 3.20 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year to earn a berth on the squad.
        The Spartans, who are the only Capital Athletic Conference institution that sponsors all 19 conference championship sports, finished second in the percentage of student-athletes earning the academic honor as 46.2% (187 of 405) of the institution’s student-athletes made the squad.
        It is the third straight year that York College has paced the conference in total student-athletes on the academic team. In 2006-07, the Spartans had 161 student-athletes on the team while they were third in percentage with 161 of 346 athletes earning accolades (46.5%). Last year, York placed 175 student-athletes on the team and owned the second-best percentage at 42.5%.
        Spartan Asst. Dean for Athletics and Recreation Sean Sullivan was happy to see another strong showing by the York College student-athletes.
        “We are extremely proud of our student-athletes for their continued excellence in the classroom. These academic results are further proof that the demands of a strong intercollegiate athletic program can be successfully paired with a challenging classroom experience,” states Sullivan. “This is the essence of Division III athletics - the complete integration of athletics within the holistic educational experiences York College and our institutional peers provide. While Spartan student-athletes make us proud with their exploits on the fields of play, it is this academic success that truly paves the way for reaching their respective future goals.”
        York College has a long string of strong academic performances as the Spartans have been first in the conference in total number student-athletes in four of the last five years. The Spartans finished with 156 student-athletes on the team in 2005-06, which was 44.3% of their total student-athletes. In 2004-05, York had a conference-leading 146 student-athletes earn the honor which converted to 48.3% of their total student-athletes.
        Overall, there were 920 Capital Athletic Conference student-athletes that earned a spot on the squad. It is the third year that the conference has had over 900 student-athletes earn the All-Academic team honors.
