The York Wind Orchestra will bring to York College a genre of original wind music that is not often performed in the area.
The orchestra will present a program of Harmonie Musik at 3 p.m., Oct. 25, in the College’s DeMeester Recital Hall. The event is open to the public free of charge. For more information, contact Wayne Romer at wromer@ycp.edu or 717-815-1526.
Harmonie Musik was founded during the Classical Period and typically features two oboes, two clarinets, two French horns and two bassoons. Great composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss and Stravinsky have all contributed to this repertoire.
The York College performance will feature music from many time periods, including the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s, as well as contemporary music of today. “This is a great opportunity for the community and the College’s own music students to hear their instructors perform in an intimate setting,” said Romer, director of instrumental studies and music education coordinator at the College.
Romer founded the Wind Orchestra, comprised of York College and regional professionals, in 2007 to bring Harmonie Musik to York County. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Concordia College, a Master of Music in trumpet performance from Ithaca College and is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He also conducts the York Wind Symphony, a student ensemble, and is a former conductor of both the York Youth Symphony Orchestra and Spring Garden Band of York.
